Wide Beam Ultrasonic Sensor For Obstacle Detection

Wide Beam Ultrasonic Sensor For Obstacle Detection - MaxBotix
wide beam ultrasonic sensor for vehicle detection Product developers and engineers like you need a solution for your sensor needs. We offer solutions for various uses, from hobby projects to industrial applications. Out of request, we’ve developed wide beam variations of our popular HRXL-MaxSonar-WR line of sensors. These variations are different from other sensors in this line primarily as it has a wide field of view. Another noticeable difference is the restricted maximum range of five feet. These sensors include 2 different versions. While both sensors read from the sensor outputs analog voltage, serial, and pulse width... The MB7375 reads RS232 and the MB7395 reads TTL. This sensor was developed so that you, the product developer, will have a sensor with a wide beam for your applications that require such.

In what applications is a wide beam sensor ideal?

A wide beam sensor is ideal for obstacle avoidance. The wide beam sensor will see obstacles over a wider field of view and prevent it from getting too close to any one target. For example, an application on a UAV where you would want to avoid trees and power lines. A wide beam sensor like the MB7375 and MB7395 would also work well in a people detection application. Assuming there aren’t any other obstacles in the area, if you want to detect if a person is somewhere in a room or a queue, this sensor would work well. If you were looking for a proximity sensor with a wide beam, this sensor would be good if you wanted to know if something or someone was in a 5-foot bubble.

In what applications is a wide beam sensor not ideal?

A wide beam sensor also may not be ideal for other applications where obstacle avoidance is the goal. The wide beam sensor will see obstacles over a wider field of view and stop motion when we are only worried about obstacles directly in front of it. Think of an application on a robot vacuum cleaning the floor and avoiding chair legs. If you take a look at the beam pattern below, you’ll see how wide of a detection pattern the MB7375 and MB7395 have. wide beam ultrasonic sensor beam patterns
Note: For the widest beam performance, we recommend operating the sensor at 5V.

Options for this wide beam sensor

Sensor Housing Styles

The MB7375 and MB7395 can be ordered in 4 different housings. (Whichever will ideally fit your application best). Our compact housing is the same as the standard housing, except, the horn doesn’t extend beyond the transducer. This is ideal for integrations where the full horn will not fit. We also provide :
  • 1”BSPP Housing
  • 1” NPS Housing
  • 30mm 1.5 Housing

Wide Beam Sensor Add-ons

For use in applications where extra protection is needed we offer a few add-ons to add extra protection for your sensor use.
  • F-Option - Provides a more chemically inert seal around the transducer by using a Fluorosilicone sealant with an additional backup FEP Teflon®.
  • P-Option - Provides a Parylene coating as a barrier to help prevent corrosion of the aluminum transducer.
  • Shielded Cable Attach - For simple integration of our sensors into end-user applications. Used to create a completely IP67 rated sensor. The sensor cap provides a fully protected pinout.
This sensor is an easy to set up solution with no special settings needed offering a beam angle wider than 90 degrees to many targets. As with the rest of our sensors, we stand by the reliability of its use. We use test parameters that establish our sensors to have a mean time between failure (MTBF) of at least 200,000 hours.
