Sensors for Reliable Oil Tank Level Sensing

Tanks serve many purposes in industrial and farm applications.  It’s very common that tanks are used in the oil and gas industry.  They serve the purpose of holding oil as well as water and other chemicals.  A problem many companies have is finding a reliable, accurate, and cost-effective method to detect the level in oil tanks.  The goal would be to develop a level indicator for your oil tank that would communicate remotely with your system to relay the tank levels to make sure your operation is running efficiently.

MaxBotix Inc. has produced sensors that integrate into tank level sensing projects using ultrasonic technology.

The following sensors have successfully been used for this use case.

MB7589-110 – a 5-meter ranging solution.

This is a weather-resistant, self-cleaning sensor often used in tank level measurement applications requiring superior clutter rejection and low operating voltages.

MB7588-110 – a 10-meter ranging solution.

This is a weather-resistant, self-cleaning sensor often used in tank level measurement applications requiring superior clutter rejection and low operating voltages.

MB7388-110 – a 10-meter ranging solution.

This is a weather-resistant solution often used in tank level measurement applications requiring low operating voltages. This version is ideal for battery-based applications with low current draw requirements.

We have successful use cases in which our Collaborators have developed end-user solutions using our sensor components.

NCD.IO developed an industrial-grade ultrasonic tank level sensor that has successfully been used for NCD’s oil & gas and agriculture clients.

It features 1-mm resolution and target size compensation which provides greater consistency and accuracy.

It has a detection range of up to 5 meters (10 meters are available upon request)

This solution will allow you to send IoT data to PCs, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and MQTT Servers.

Radio Bridge developed a solution that is successfully used in tank level monitoring and measurement applications.

The level sensor provides high accuracy ultrasonic proximity detection and ranging in the air.

If the level in the tank exceeds or drops below a defined threshold, an alert is sent to the wireless network.

Versions of this particular sensor support the major LPWAN standards such as Sigfox, LoRa/LoraWan, and NBIoT.

With this solution you can expect 20,000-200,000+ transmission on a single battery, and a 5-10 year battery life depending on the usage.

Lastly, Invigicom Inc has developed an easy-to-use solution that replaces traditional tank monitoring systems that use float gauges or pressure sensors.  This is a turnkey tank monitoring solution.

Invigicom uses a web-based wireless sensor system that monitors the tanks and provides near real-time data on their contents.

The IngiviSense product family provides a complete system that collects data from the tanks, stores it in the cloud, and allows users to access the data from any browser.

MaxBotix Inc. supplies the non-contact sensor needed for this particular application, measuring the liquid level in a tank without placing the sensor in the liquid.

Invigicom’s goal was to provide an easy to use solution for wireless ultrasonic tank level monitoring.

You can screw the sensor module into a standard 2 inch port in the tank and turn on a web browser to see the data.
