The SCXL-MaxSonar-WRS sensor line introduces an effective self-cleaning capability designed to reduce the impact of condensation in closed or high-moisture (dew, frost, etc.) environments. This sensor is a cost-effective solution for applications where precision range-finding, low-voltage operation, space saving, low-cost, self-cleaning, and IP67 weather resistance rating is needed. This innovative sensor component module allows users of other, more costly precision rangefinders to lower the cost of their systems without sacrificing performance.
The SCXL-MaxSonar-WRS self-cleaning sensor line provides high accuracy, high resolution ultrasonic proximity detection and ranging in air, and high sensitivity with an IP67 weather resistant rating. This sensor line features 1-mm resolution, target-size and operating-voltage compensation for improved accuracy, superior rejection of outside noise sources, internal speed of sound temperature compensation and optional external speed-of-sound temperature compensation. The SCXL MaxSonar-WRS self-cleaning snow depth measurement sensors are all available with a 5-meter maximum range. Models are available with the sfollowing outputs: Pulse Width, Analog Voltage, RS232 Serial (select models) or TTL Serial (select models).

The Difference Between SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS Sensors
MB7534 and MB7544
These sensors have a filter that will reset when targets are considered outside of a 2% distance window. This makes the sensor an ideal balance for accurately monitory slow or stationary targets that occasionally move rapidly such as grain bins.
MB7554 and MB7574
These sensors have a rate limiting filter that allows for a maximum change of 1mm per reading. This improves the sensor’s accuracy and stability by reducing the influence of interference caused by wind, acoustic noise, thermal changes, and other effects. This makes the sensor ideal for snow depth measurement even in environments with blizzard conditions.
MB7564 and MB7584
These sensors are the base model in the SCXL-MaxSonar-WRS sensor series. These sensors will update all outputs as the target’s distance changes without the influence of the two filters mentioned above.

The industrial outdoor SCXL-MaxSonar-WRS self‑cleaning sensors have a robust PVC housing designed to meet IP67 water intrusion. The sensors provide short to long distance detection and ranging with a narrow beam pattern. The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning outdoor ultrasonic sensors have high power output, noise rejection, auto calibration, and factory calibrated beam patterns. Users should select a sensor with their outputs of choice and reading filtering that matches their application. Models are available with analog voltage output, serial digital output, pulse width output (select models), & real-time analog envelope output (select models).
In addition to the standard SCXL-MaxSonar-WRS self‑cleaning sensors, MaxBotix Inc. has developed the F-Option for additional protection necessary in a few hazardous chemical environments. Extremely corrosive gases or liquids can degrade or compromise the operation of the sensing unit. As a result, we offer a more chemically inert seal which allows our sensors to operate in all but the harshest of chemical environments. In addition to the chemical resistance the sensor has improved performance in wet or dust environments. Standard Weather Resistant Models
The exposed materials of a properly mounted SCXL-MaxSonar-WR self‑cleaning sensor are: Aluminum (oxidized surface), PVC, & silicone rubber (VMQ).

To ensure long term operation of the sensor, terminal connections should not be exposed to water, dust, or other chemicals. Follow proper mounting when installing your sensor. This is easily accomplished using standard PVC pipe fittings which match the provided mounting threads (3/4" National Pipe Thread Straight) MB7950 Mounting hardware can be purchased along with your sensor.
Sensors are designed for operation in air, but may work well in many gases. Testing for proper operation is encouraged. Compensation for speed of sound changes in other gases should be applied to sensor output, this is often accomplished through a simple 2 point linear calibration.

The Noise Filtering

Internal Temperature Compensation
The speed of sound in air increases about 0.6 meters per second, per degree centigrade. Because of this, each SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor is equipped with an internal temperature sensor which allows the sensor to apply a compensation for speed of sound changes.
With the internal temperature sensor, range readings immediately (within twenty seconds) after power up are the most accurate, and this is ideal for battery applications where the sensor is powered off most of the time. As such, self heating will cause the sensor to read the actual air temperature inaccurately.
External Temperature Sensor
With the HR‑MaxTemp connected to the SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning line of sensors,realtime automatic temperature compensation is available. The HR-MaxTemp allows the SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor to monitor the changes to air temperature while ignoring self-heating.
The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor is designed to used alongside the HR‑MaxTemp temperature sensor. On power-up the SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor will automatically detect an attached temperature sensor and begin to apply temperature compensation for the speed of sound changes to all range outputs.
The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor interface was designed to be very easy and intuitive to use. The interface output formats included are pulse width output, analog voltage output, and RS232 or TTL serial output. All interfaces work without user code or complicated setup strings.
The Power Requirements
The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor functions throughout a 2.7V to 5.5V operational voltage range. This allows for easy integration at either 3.3V or 5V and means that users of low voltage microcontrollers, or those who wish to operate in solar or battery based systems do not have to provide an extra power supply for the sensor.

The Controlled Narrow Beam Shape
Similar ultrasonic products may have frequent side lobe detection and can even falsely trigger on objects behind or to the sides of the sensor. The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor offers a controlled narrow beam that is designed to reject small objects (clutter) outside of the central beam area and provides long range sensitivity without detecting frivolous or unwanted targets.
Each SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor is made and tested for proper operation at our facility in the USA and comes with a factory calibrated narrow beam pattern to help ensure consistent operation of the sensor even from part to part.
The SCXL‑MaxSonar‑WRS self‑cleaning sensor automatically calibrates to its environment before every range reading. This calibration includes compensation for temperature, voltage, humidity, acoustic noise, and electrical noise conditions.
This sensor is designed to be sold in volume. As a result, our customers benefit from our large production volumes and distributed engineering expenses.
