The industrial outdoor XL‑MaxSonar‑WR sensors have a robust PVC housing designed to meet IP67 water intrusion. The sensors provide short to long distance detection and ranging with a narrow beam pattern. The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR outdoor ultrasonic sensors have high power output, noise rejection, auto calibration, and factory calibrated beam patterns. Users should select a sensor with their outputs of choice and reading filtering that matches their application. Different applications require different sensors. The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR series of outdoor sensors offer a variety of features allowing users to select the best sensor to meet their needs.

The table above shows features that exist in each of the products. To view how each sensor will function to different sized targets reference the XL‑MaxSonar‑WR Beam Patterns.

The Difference Between XL-MaxSonar-WR and XL-MaxSonar-WRA

The XL-MaxSonar-WR sensors have pulse width output.
The XL-MaxSonar-WRA sensors have analog envelope output. The AE output allows for easy troubleshooting and is also suitable for users who wish to do advanced signal processing.
Both the XL-MaxSonar-WR product line and the XL-MaxSonar-WRA product line offer users the serial and analog voltage distance outputs.

The Difference Between XL-MaxSonar-WR and XL-MaxSonar-WRL

The XL-MaxSonar-WR have a maximum range of765 cm (300 inches) Sensors will output serial output of five characters: "R" followed by three digits representing the range information, and a carriage return. Analog voltage scaling is Vcc/1024 per cm, and limited by supplied voltage.

The XL-MaxSonar-WRL sensors have a maximum range of 1068 cm (420 inches). Sensors will output serial output of six characters: "R" followed by four digits representing the range information and a carriage return. Analog voltage scaling is Vcc/2048 per cm.

The Difference Between XL-MaxSonar-WR and XL-MaxSonar-WRC

Sensors from the XL-MaxSonar-WR product line offer better overall performance then the XL-MaxSonar-WRC but have a larger size.

Sensors from the XL-MaxSonar-WRC product line offer a more compact housing for use in applications where there are mounting or weight restrictions.

Weather Resistant (IP67) Sensors, and Optional Chemical Resistance

The industrial outdoor XL-MaxSonar-WR sensors have a robust PVC housing designed to meet IP67 water intrusion. The sensors provide short to long distance detection and ranging with a narrow beam pattern. The XL-MaxSonar-WR outdoor ultrasonic sensors have high power output, noise rejection, auto calibration, and factory calibrated beam patterns. Users should select a sensor with their outputs of choice and reading filtering that matches their application. Models are available with analog voltage output, serial digital output, pulse width output (select models), & real-time analog envelope output (select models).

In addition to the standard XL-MaxSonar-WR, MaxBotix Inc. has developed the F-Option for additional protection necessary in a few hazardous chemical environments. Extremely corrosive gases or liquids can degrade or compromise the operation of the sensing unit. As a result, we offer a more chemically inert seal which allows our sensors to operate in all but the harshest of chemical environments. In addition to the chemical resistance the sensor has improved performance in wet or dust environments.

Standard Weather Resistant Models

The exposed materials of a properly mounted XL-MaxSonar-WR sensor are: Aluminum (oxidized surface), PVC, & silicone rubber (VMQ).

F-Option

The exposed materials of a properly mounted XL-MaxSonar-WR sensor with the F-Option added are: Aluminum (oxidized surface), PVC, & Flourosilicone (with an additional back up FEP Teflon® seal).

Additional Considerations

To ensure long term operation of the sensor, terminal connections should not be exposed to water, dust, or other chemicals. Follow proper mounting when installing your sensor. This is easily accomplished using standard PVC pipe fittings which match the provided mounting threads (3/4" National Pipe Thread Straight)  MB7950 Mounting hardware can be purchased along with your sensor.

Sensors are designed for operation in air, but may work well in many gases. Testing for proper operation is encouraged. Compensation for speed of sound changes in other gases should be applied to sensor output, this is often accomplished through a simple 2 point linear calibration.

Rugged & Reliable Outdoor Ultrasonic Sensors

The industrial XL‑MaxSonar‑WR products are the highest quality for cost outdoor ultrasonic sensors on the market. They provide an industrial component module solution that offers easy to use outputs, weather & dust resistance, no sensor dead zone, calibrated narrow beam patterns, stable range readings, low power demands, and a host of other features detailed in the product datasheets.

The XL-MaxSonar-WR sensors represent an industry revolution that has already found use in a number of advanced or industrial solutions where ultrasonic sensors have not been historically considered a viable solution due to unstable readings, high cost, and high power requirements.

The Noise Filtering

The sensor dynamically adjusts its sensitivity to compensate for outside electrical & acoustic noise sources.

The Interface

The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR interface was designed to be very easy and intuitive to use. The interface output formats included are pulse width output, analog voltage output, and asynchronous serial digital output. All interfaces work without user code or complicated setup strings.

The Power Requirements

The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR functions throughout a 3.0V to 5.5V operational voltage range.  This allows for easy integration at either 3.3V or 5V and means that users of low voltage microcontrollers, or those who wish to operate in solar or battery based systems do not have to provide an extra power supply for the sensor.

The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR sensors have a 3.4mA average current draw during free ranging operation.

The Controlled Narrow Beam Shape

Similar ultrasonic products may have frequent side lobe detection and can even falsely trigger on objects behind or to the sides of the sensor. The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR offers a controlled narrow beam that is designed to reject small objects (clutter) outside of the central beam area and provides long range sensitivity without detecting frivolous or unwanted targets.

The Calibration

Each XL‑MaxSonar‑WR is tested for proper operation at our facility and comes with a factory calibrated narrow beam pattern to help ensure consistent operation of the sensor even from part to part.

The XL‑MaxSonar‑WR automatically calibrates to its environment before every range reading. This calibration includes compensation for voltage, humidity, acoustic noise, and electrical noise conditions. Temperature compensation for speed of sound changes are not applied.

The Price

This sensor is designed to be sold in volume. As a result, our customers benefit from our large production volumes and distributed engineering expenses.

Typical Wall Pipe Many customers have requested the option to mount an ultrasonic sensor in a pipe. During the testing and development cycle, we discovered a number of considerations and requirements that must be met for the application to be successful. When all of these are met, a user may be able to achieve the desired level of success for measuring the liquid level inside of a pipe.
