How Ultrasonic Sensors Work

Ultrasonic sensors work by sending out a sound wave at a frequency above the range of human hearing. The transducer of the sensor acts as a microphone to receive and a transmitter to send the ultrasonic sound. Our ultrasonic sensors, like many others, use a single transducer to send a pulse and to receive the echo. The sensor determines the distance to a target by measuring time lapses between the sending and receiving of the ultrasonic pulse. Read more at this link.

Don't wait any longer. Take the first step towards a worry-free tank management experience. Upgrade to the MaxBotix Tank Sensor today and enjoy the confidence that comes with being in control of your tank levels. Your peace of mind is just a click away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the range of the ultrasonic tank sensor?

The range of sensors varies depending on the specific model. The MB7850 and MB7851 offer a max range of 5,000mm. The MB7853 and MB7854 sensors offer a max range of 16,500mm.

What is the minimum range of the ultrasonic tank sensor?

The minimum range of sensors varies depending on the specific model. The MB7850 and MB7851 offer a minimum range of 50mm. The sensors will detect liquid and report 50mm from 0mm to 50mm.

The minimum range of the MB7853 is 300mm. The sensors will detect liquid and report 300mm from 0mm to 300mm.

How long will the tank sensor last?

The ultrasonic sensors sensor are designed for high reliability with an impressive MTBF over 200,000 hours.

Can I power the sensor with batteries?

Yes, the sensor has an average current draw between 1.6mA and 1.8mA. In very low power applications with infrequent readings, the sensors are typically powered off in-between range readings. Most properly designed IoT systems can get greater than 1 year of battery life with the above implementation. The wireless communication section of the system is normally the highest current draw of the system.

How long does it take for my order to ship?

A sensor ordered without cable will ship in 1 to 5 business days.

A sensor order with cable or other options may take up to 10 business days as the sensor might need to be made to order.

Quantities ordered over 50 units may have an increased lead time.

What is the operating temperature range for these sensors?

The operational temperature range is -40ºC to +65ºC (-40ºF to +149ºF).

Will the sensor work in a chemical environment?

MaxBotix has designed the sensor to work in many environments. The exposed materials of a properly mounted TankSensor™ are: Parylene coated Aluminum, ABS, & silicone rubber (VMQ). You can cross reference the materials for compatibility in your environment on our ultrasonic sensor chemical compatibility chart.

What is the teach feature on the sensor and how do I use it?

This feature is recommended to be used to store information on what the empty tank looks like. This is used to improve the reliability of short range readings.

You send a "T" or "t" command into the sensor to save a new calibration. Complete information on sending commands to the sensor is found on page 6 of the datasheet.

Can I use the tank sensor to measure solids?

The tank sensor is not recommended for measuring solids. We advise considering some of our other sensors that are better suited for solid material measurements.
